Self-responsibility

responsibility

[ ri-spon-suh-bil-i-tee ]
noun,  plural re·spon·si·bil·i·ties.the state or fact of being responsible, answerable, or accountable for something within one’s power, control, or management. As a species we have a tremendous misunderstanding of what we are and can be responsible for.  Self responsibility is a state of being that is not encouraged or supported by most of our societies.  We are told, and we see messages everywhere that fault for our problems (personal and societal) lie with someone else…outside of us.  These messages form belief systems that keep running within us, long after the message has stopped playing.  The message says that someone else is responsible for the current state of the world and our lives, and someone or something has to change for things to get better.  This leaves everyone standing firmly outside of positions of power, and in the position of having to wait for change to appear.  This is the epitome of powerlessness……  Change is impossible in this version of the story…….We imagine that if only……

  • the current government will change, or a new one will be elected then our society will be wise and compassionate
  • our partner will change and be more loving, so that we can feel loved
  • the school system will offer programs that meet the needs of my kids, or is in some way more supportive for them, our children will have all their needs met
  • the animal welfare laws get changed animals will be treated well and kindly
  • we make more money, we will be safe and physically taken care of
  • our job is secure then we will have what money we need in the future
  • Other people stop being so stupid, then this will be a better world

Not one of those or the many other stories of powerless is the root cause of the stress or sadness (which can present itself as anger) related to but not limited to, things like……

  • the loneliness of not feeling supported
  • the fear of being unlovable
  • panic created by an unstable economy
  • worry around your child’s future and how the education system is preparing them for adulthood etc.
  • sadness at how dysfunctional our world or society is
  • hopelessness at the suffering of the world’s animals
  • powerlessness of disagreeable or unethical government policy
  • the safety of all children
  • the outrage related to damage and changes to our environment, climate and eco systems
  • sadness for missing women who no one is looking for
  • panic and dispair at not having enough money to pay the bills

I had feedback from one client that said….”The biggest change I have seen in myself since working with you is how I’ve been able to deal with some massive events in my life. Things that would have previously broken me completely to my core. Instead, I am able to step back from my personal experience and see the situation from a much broader perspective.”

The root cause is addressed in the shifting of perspective.  None of the solutions to those things are outside of ourselves.  We are the only thing we can change.  The feeling that is shared by so many….the feeling of powerlessness is rooted in the incorrect and misaligned belief that all solutions are found outside of ourselves.  None of the solutions are found outside of ourselves.  The only true solutions….and the only GOOD solutions are found within each of us.  Each contributing our own unique genius, to solve these and other problems in our lives and world.  WE can change the world one point of inspiration at a time.

This is one of my favourite comics……it speaks volumes.
